Wildfires Ravage Hollywood Hills, Triggering Evacuations
Here are the latest developments on the wildfires tearing through the Hollywood Hills, which have spread dramatically. In the early morning hours of January 9, 2025, another fire, dubbed the Sunset Fire, started in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood, leading to immediate and mandatory evacuations. The fire, which is at least 20 acres and 0% contained, is burning rapidly through a densely populated area between Runyon Canyon and Wattles Park. The orders affect areas from Laurel Canyon Boulevard in the west to Mulholland Drive in the north, down to the 101 Freeway in the east and as far south as Hollywood Boulevard.
Fire crews are making aggressive air attacks on the fire, and lighter winds are improving those efforts. But high winds, dry conditions and low water pressure have hampered firefighting operations. The Los Angeles fires, including the Sunset Fire, have caused massive evacuations, with more than 130,000 people under evacuation orders in various parts of the city because of multiple fires.
These wildfires have destroyed structures as well as lives, killing at least five people and injuring dozens more. It is now historic a natural disaster facing the United States within the City Hurst Fire, Palisades Fire, Eaton Fire, Lidia Fire and now the Sunset Fire destroying. The Sunset Fire has been especially concerning given its proximity to landmarks such as the Hollywood Bowl and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, although no homes had been reported lost in this particular fire as of the most recent updates.
Firefighting teams from other states are being called in to help, with resources stretched thin.
Conditions remain dynamic and more flareups possible as Santa Ana Winds continue to blow. Schools, including in the Los Angeles Unified School District, have closed and emergency shelters have opened for people and animals.

The response to these fires is being watched closely by the federal agencies, prompting President Biden to cancel a trip to Italy to concentrate on the crisis.
