India’s iPhone Export Milestone
Over the past several years, India has become an important component of Apple’s global manufacturing strategy, with iPhone exports reaching new milestones:
iPhone Export Boom: Exports of Apple’s iPhone from India have boomed, topping nearly $6 billion in the first six months to September 2024 This marks a 33% rise from the corresponding period last year, with yearly exports on course to exceed the around $10 billion of fiscal 2024.
Market Share and Production: India currently contributes 14% to the global iPhone production, with projections indicating this will increase to 26% by 2026. The move is part of Apple’s wider efforts to diversify its manufacturing footprint, cut its dependence on China amid rising geopolitical tensions, and take advantage of tax breaks on offer in India.
Localised Manufacturing and Employment Generation- Apple’s manufacturing in India includes key players Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata Electronics, while Foxconn alone accounts for half of the entire iPhone exports from India. Enabling this growth, the Apple ecosystem has helped create over 150,000 new jobs in the past few years.
Economic impact: The increase in iPhone shipments has helped make electronics India’s fifth-largest export category, with the new Android iPhone also accounting for 35% of India’s total electronics exports in some periods.
PLI: Government schemes are another factor that have been key in driving this growth in exports.
Future Scope: Statements and posts on X report a recent statement from US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stating over a quarter of all iPhone production will soon find its way to India, indicating scale-up in manufacturing capabilities.
Such moves underscore the growing importance of India as a partner in the global supply chain for electronics — especially for high-end phones like the iPhone.
